Statement by the Committee

March 22, 2022 @ 8:00 am - June 1, 2022 @ 5:00 pm

The current war in the Ukraine is of great concern to those citizens of Australia who have relatives and friends in Ukraine and Russia. We hope that the senseless loss of lives and injuries caused by the hostilities there will cease quickly to prevent further tragedies from occurring. We pray for an eventual treaty and peaceful outcome.

The Queensland Russian Community Centre was created in Brisbane by White Russian immigrants and refugees who came from Manchuria in the late 1950s. We have always welcomed and respected the rights of immigrants who came from other overseas nations to escape from conflicts in their country of origin. We all shared in our various journeys to eventually become proud and contributing citizens of Australia. Over the years, our hands of friendship have traditionally been extended to peoples from all the ex-Soviet States including people from the Ukraine and other parts of the world. We intend to continue to do so in the future.

Whilst we acknowledge the mixed and disparate nature of the Russian Diaspora here in Brisbane, as the result of an influx of new immigrants who came here for economic and business reasons after the breakup of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, we do have a common thread of humanity. No one can remotely watch the current daily shameful events of carnage unfold in the Ukraine without a sense of anxiety and fear for those innocent women and children bearing the senseless burdens of war.

We do not condone what we are witnessing and pray that matters come back to the diplomatic table as soon as possible. We want to see peace prevail in the Ukraine, the Donbas areas and Russia to allow all families, their sons and daughters, to be safe in a world that preserves life and dignity for all.
